Germany–India infrastructure desk

German engineering already has deep roots in India, and a €10 billion green partnership is funding the next wave of energy, mobility and urban projects. We help German firms turn that interest into Indian partners, approvals and won contracts.

Germany and India today

  • Bilateral finance is flowing into infrastructure

Under the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership, Germany has committed €10 billion to 2030, mostly as KfW concessional loans for renewables, green hydrogen, grids, urban mobility and climate-resilient cities. About €5 billion was used or earmarked by January 2026, and a further €1.24 billion was announced during Chancellor Merz’s visit, including support for electric buses and green hydrogen.

  • KfW-funded projects you can bid around

KfW has lent €340 million for Bengaluru Metro Phase II (Rs 3,044 crore of a Rs 30,695 crore project), and has co-funded Ahmedabad Metro, solar parks and Mumbai waste management. Lender-funded packages often follow procurement rules that are more open to international bidders.

  • Green hydrogen is the new front

thyssenkrupp nucera agreed with BHEL in July 2026 to manufacture alkaline electrolysers in India and bid jointly for projects, and Uniper signed a green ammonia purchase agreement with AM Green. Local manufacturing with an Indian partner is becoming the standard entry route in this sector.

Germany has no separate trade agreement with India. It is covered by the India–EU free trade agreement, whose negotiations concluded on 27 January 2026; signing was reported for December 2026, with entry into force expected in 2027.
